The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium is home to thousands of animals including those that are endangered or threatened. This 77 acre property is a short drive from Heinz Lofts, and it offers several exhibits such as:
Water’s Edge – The Water’s Edge exhibit features large underwater tunnels, as well as indoor and outdoor viewing windows that allow for an up-close look of the polar bears, northern sea otters, and sand tiger sharks.
Asian Forest – As you explore the lush Asian Forest, you’ll see red pandas, Amur tigers, snow leopards, and Komodo dragons.
Tropical Forest – Spanning the globe from the Amazon to Madagascar, the Tropical Forest is home to several animals who enjoy climbing, swinging, or running their way through this exhibit. They include black-and-white ruffed lemurs, mandrills, Hoffman’s two-toed sloths, blue monkeys, white-cheeked gibbons, and Western lowland gorillas.
African Savanna – The purpose of the African Savanna exhibit is to teach visitors about the conservation, life cycles, and threats of the animals who call it home. Some of what you’ll see includes cheetahs, Amur leopards, Masai giraffes, African lions, African elephants, and dama gazelles.
PPG Aquarium – At the PPG Aquarium, you’ll learn about the amazing creatures that live beneath the ocean. Animals include electric eels, Gentoo penguins, greenside darter fish, King penguins, pot-bellied seahorses, and zebra sharks.
If you want a unique look at the zoo, take a behind-the-scenes tour. Tours include the Sea Lion Encounter, Penguin Encounter and the Reptile Encounter, although they are not offered year round due to issues such as animal behavior factors and inclement weather conditions.
