Looking for a place to stop for a quick lunch close to your home at HeinzLofts or your place of work? Here are a few little-known sandwich shops near these apartments in Pittsburgh.
This classic sub shop has been successful enough to expand to four locations around the ‘Burgh, including one on Penn Avenue not far from Heinz Lofts. That’s partially thanks to menu item #7, the Roethlisburger, along with many other hearty Steeler-themed sandwiches. But the shop originally built its reputation on excellent cheesesteaks and hot Italian sandwiches, which it still specializes in and serves a large number daily.
Smallman Street Deli is more of a New York-style sandwich shop, known for things like corned beef, reuben and pastrami on rye. You can also get non-sandwich Jewish favorites like matzoh ball soup and bagels with lox. In addition to the location near Heinz Lofts apartments, you can also find them in Squirrel Hill, but the menus at the two locations are slightly different.
Gaucho isn’t just a local favorite; it regularly makes Yelp’s annual Top 100 Places To Eat In The U.S. list! It’s loved for the unique approach to wood-firing the meats and the unique Argentinian spices and marinades. Argentina is a country that really knows its beef and you’ll see for yourself after eating here — just be prepared to wait a while as there is usually a long line at lunchtime!
