A short drive from Heinz Lofts is the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. It’s one of the top five natural history museums in the country and thousands of visitors have walked through its doors since 1896. You can enjoy a variety of exhibits such as:
The Hall of African Wildlife exhibit tells the story of Africa’s mountains, deserts, savannas, and rainforests, along with the animals that call these places home. They include warthogs, giraffes, lowland gorillas, zebras, and wildebeests.
This exhibit is one of the largest on Canadian Inuits in North America. It takes visitors through their colonization 4,500 years ago to present day. Highlights include a full-sized replica of a polar bear, artifacts that relate to the whaling industry, and full-sized dioramas of fishing and mammal hunting.
According to the museum’s website, Dinosaurs in Their Time is the world’s first permanent exhibit to display scientifically accurate, immersive environments spanning the Mesozoic Era. You will learn interesting dinosaur facts and see fossils of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures.
The Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt teaches visitors about life in ancient Egypt. It showcases over 2,500 artifacts such as tools, jewelry, stone vessels, a mummy, and a funerary boat that dates back 3,800 years.
As you navigate through this exhibit, you will learn all about North America’s major ecosystems: coniferous forest, deciduous forest, desert, grassland, and tundra. On display are dioramas of animals in their natural habitat.
